Some new and fascinating plants are in at Palm Farm! Many make ideal gifts and are eminently affordable.

Firstly, we are proud to announce the arrival of the Hawaiian Palm (Brighama insignis).

When Hawaii was discovered around 1000 years ago, there was serious disruption to native fauna and flora. The moth that used to pollinate this beautiful plant with its long tongue was eradicated and the palm was threatened with extinction. In the early nineties there were only 7 plants left. Then, hand pollination by dedicated scientists who found the palm on dangerous volcano slopes turned things round! Young plants are now grown in a reserve for return later to the wild.

A few seeds were used to start a breeding program and a line was selected that was suitable as a house plant. Together with IUCN, The World Conservation Union, these plants are now sold and a portion of the proceeds are donated to a fund that is financing the rescue of the Brighamia and other endangered plants on Hawaii. Available in two sizes at £9.99 and £17.49.

Another addition is the Bonsai-like Brachychiton australis otherwise known as Bottle Trees because of their characteristic swollen trunks or by their Aboriginal name, Kurrajong.

They are typically drought-tolerant in their natural environment. Because of their swollen trunks and distinctive leaf shapes, they make interesting bonsai and tub plants which tolerate a range of soil types. It is often used as an indoor or warm-climate bonsai/summer patio plant. The bottle shaped trunk may start to be noticeable at around 6-8 years of age. Plants cost £12.49.

We also have some new Cycas revoluta in a range of sizes from only £9.99 to £17.49. Some novelty items too like a small Olive Tree with a sample bottle of olive oil at £7.49.
