Agaves

The Agaves for sale online and in our nursery are primarily Mexican plants which come in various sizes and colours. Most are symmetrical and are made up of spiny, succulent, often stiff and thorny leaves with little or no stem. Some can grow quite large whilst others are more petite. Generally, they are fairly easy to grow and take little care once established. Agaves also come in a variety of colors and are excellent show plants for those who need a relatively hardy plant with a predictable shape. They need little water, little fertililiser, and very little attention.

Some of these have interesting uses, the production of tequila for example.

They tend to regularly produce offsets (babies) which can be carefully removed with a knife (taking a little root if possible)and planted on. For pot culture it is best to use a well draining mix in a relatively shallow pot, though most agaves will do well in deep pots too. In general, these are not easy plants to overwater as are many other succulents, but some exceptions exist. And they are not plants that are easy to underwater either, though no agave can exist forever without at least some water. Watering thoroughly once a week in the summer (more often if plant is in full sun and/or unglazed clay pot, the same occurs if you live in a hot, dry climate) is usually fine, and less often in winter.
