Musella lasiocarpa – Chinese Dwarf Banana

The Chinese Dwarf Banana (known as Musella Lasiocarpa) is a rare Banana relative that comes from high altitudes (9200 ft) in the Yunnan Province in China. It capable of producing a banana flower even without leaves on the plant. The local name for this plant translates to “Yellow Lotus of the Earth Mother”. This Plant is regarded as sacred to the Yunnan Buddhists.
The dwarf Chinese Banana plant will grow between 5 – 6 feet tall and produces a large 6” globe-like flower with brilliant deep yellow waxy bracts that is very dramatic and sunburst shape – like a large golden lotus lasting for 6 months or more. It likes full sun to partial shade and it needs heavy feeding high in Nitrogen and water in order to produce a good size flower. It can be grown indoors with sufficient light and grown in a container that makes it a very popular and attractive and eye catching terrace and indoor plant.
The plant is reasonably hardy, but best protected during winter. The root system is purported to be hardy down to -10°C. As the plant matures it produces tiny bananas full of shiny black seeds.

The 20/30cm plant is currently in a 9cm pot. It will be sent in its pot.The 40/50 was re-potted recently and is quickly gaining size in a 5L pot. This size is too expensive to send 1st class in its pot so it will be sent bare root. This will not affect the plant adversely.
