Agave ferox
- Type: Agave
Huge, and you can find scary variants that are 6 ft tall x 12 ft wide in ideal Mediterranean conditions. They have an urn-shaped silhouette made up of foot wide, grey leaves. Originating in Mexico, these are common as accents in gardens with Mediterranean climates, as they rarely flower. Sun, good drainage, and very little summer water is necessary. The name ferox comes from the thick and strong leaves, and the hard and long (up to 8cm) spines. Highly architectural, good examples are much sought after. If kept dry in winter, shows substantial resistance to frost and is one of the hardiest of the big agaves to 15°F (-9°C). An impressive container plant, it produces plenty of offsets which can be saved as insurance against a cold winter.
