Agave striata
- Type: Agave
This clumping species of agave forms fairly open rosettes, with thin grey-green leaves to about 1/4" wide by 2 feet long. The leaves often have a reddish cast, and are tipped with a sharp spine. The flower spike is very crooked, and is lined with redpurple flowers. The mother plant dies after flowering, but offsets keep the population going. Native to northeastern Mexico, this agave occurs on dry hillsides and in limestone soils. Plant in full sun in cooler climates. They make excellent accent plants for a landscaped garden or as a feature in a rock garden. These plants are very hardy in areas that are partial to drought and can withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees F. They will not, however, survive temperatures below 15 degrees F or overwatering. When cared for properly, the agave striata can produce lovely red or purple blooms in the spring, summer, or autumn, depending on the area in which they are grown.
