Brachychiton are commonly called Bottle Trees because of their characteristic swollen trunks or by their Aboriginal name, Kurrajong
In the natural habitat the Brachychiton Australis is used to as much sun and heat as you can give it. It can also live through frosts of down to -8c but the low point may only be for minutes and not hours. Like all Brachychitons and most Australian natives they do not like sitting in water for long periods – the roots will rot.
You will notice the roots are soft and mostly tap roots like a carrot. You can prune the roots especially the lateral roots which makes them an ideal tree near buildings as the roots are not invasive. Also they will not rob water from lawns so you can have grass up to the tree. The Australis will drop its leaves during winter and form new growth in spring.
To maximise growth feed the trees a high Nitrogen / low Phosphorus food. Australian native plants do not like heavy doses of Phosphorus… the soils there are generally much lower in Phosphorus than other parts of the world.
Of all the Brachychitons the Australis is the fastest growing. Generally they will not grow much over the 6-8 m in height in their natural habitat and the canopy is generally compact.
They are typically drought-tolerant in their natural environment. Because of their swollen trunks and distinctive leaf shapes, they make interesting bonsai and tub plants which tolerate a range of soil types. It is often used as indoor or warm-climate bonsai. The bottle shaped trunk may start to be noticeable at around 6-8 years of age.
Its swollen trunk is primarily used for water storage. The name of the bottle tree can be taken literally, as there is a significant amount of water stored between the inner bark and the trunk. Aboriginals historically carved holes into the soft bark to create reservoir-like structures. The seeds, roots, stems, and bark have all traditionally been a source of food for people and animals alike (though the seeds are hairy and can irritate the skin). Another use has been made of the fibrous inner bark to make twine or rope and even woven together to make fishing nets.
