Together with S. etonia, this is the smallest of the Sabals and an important and popular species because of its legendary cold hardiness. It is reputed to withstand -20°C, making it one of the world’s most hardy palms.
Occurring naturally in the understory of deciduous woodland in the south eastern United States, it can be quite a common component of the forest vegetation. The long, upright inflorescences rising well above the leaves, together with its small seeds, add to its attractiveness.
It is one of the few palms to have costapalmate leaves, which is almost halfway between a fan palm and a feather palm. The leaves are roughly round like a fan, but have a central midrib like feather palms. It grows to about 2.4m (8 feet) in the wild and grows most of its trunk underground. It likes boggy ground and can take full sun.
Needs decent heat in the summer to promote growth.
