This very hardy columnar cactus hails from highly-elevated areas of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru and rarely gets over 5 feet tall indoors; not cold hardy at temperatures below 20 Fahrenheit.  It does very well in the UK climate and will even take a little moisture during our winters. Happy  either in a pot or in the ground but it must have free draining soil and full sun. Covered with spines, its dark green stem, takes on a wooly appearance with age. In maturity, it will also branch out and adopt a tree-like form. Its flowers are large, usually about six inches, and are pinkish-white. The fruit it produces is edible, and its cores have been used to make rain sticks
